Members Launch Board Game!

Introduction

Braden and I (Ethan) are two guys who met at a school we both used to work at. He was a band teacher and I was a PE teacher. We both hit it off and found ourselves basically joined at the hip! Between exercising together, discussing politics and religion, and figuring out entrepreneurship and finance, we discovered a mutually shared passion for board games! Thus, was born a partnership that has brought us to where we are…

I have a beautiful wife, Nancy, and am father to two wonderful boys, one 3-year-old, August, and a newborn, Mathias,  just 2 months old. Our family lives in Castle Rock, Colorado and I teach band in the Highlands Ranch area for a few different schools.  I am a dedicated member of Central Bible Church and love the community that it brings. Most of my time is spent with family, friends, teaching, or working on board games with Strategic Pastime Ltd.

I am a husband to my wife Rachel, father to my son Ezekiel, member of Stone Arbor Church, and jack of a couple different trades. This article highlights my involvement in Strategic Pastime Ltd. And our first published project, but I am also a personal trainer, whole food supplement manager, handy man, and Private Family Banking Agent. My allegiance is to the King of Kings, Jesus Christ and my vocations are in submission to him! Alongside that, I like sports, national parks, and being with my friends!

Where We Started

Like I mentioned, Braden and I discovered a real passion for board games. In fact, both he and I had been independently designing board games for a few years as a side hobby. I had been listening and working through different resources like podcasts, books, and lectures/conferences on entrepreneurship and developed a strong interest in business. Braden and I talked more about what we would love to see happen and it finally dawned on us that a partnership was a great next step! Strategic Pastime Ltd. was formed soon after.

Strategic Pastime Ltd.

The name bleeds into the goal. Pastime is a rare thing in California (where I am from). Life is busy. However, in the hustle and bustle, the need for recreation will present itself eventually. Weekly periods of rest give way to robust and productive days ahead and so came the name: Strategic Pastime. Pastime must be strategically planned for and carved out in your week. Board games are a means of sharing an adventure with your friends and/or family. They harness a welcoming environment that can be competitive or cooperative. Both styles provide value shaping experiences for families and friends alike.

Goal

If you don’t know already, a good portion of the board game, table top game, and card game world can be interesting. Most people have ambitions to use things like games to flesh reality and dive into unreality. Our goal is to do the exact opposite. Our mission statement is this:

“Supplement True Legends using Mythically True games you can live and relive.”

At first this phrase seems oxymoronic and counter intuitive. Let me help unpack it. We live in a world that is truly legendary. The magnificence of God’s world is typically taken for granted, but our perception of the world does not dictate what is real. So, this is a small reminder that the world is truly magnificent, it is legendary. Our games are fictional, but steeped in reality.

'They are mythically true games because they don’t easily provide opportunity to leave reality by validating cheating, murder, or any other unethical “in-game” decision. Therefore, to operate successfully in our games, you must adapt principles that promote successful operation in life! So, our games add to the true legends of life with games that are inherently realistic although fictional that you can live and relive over and over again!

Regascent: Contest of Champions

There are several ways to pronounce this game title… tomato, tomawto…

We aren’t picky. I made the name up after our original name was found out to have been used already! It is a combination of the words “Regal, Regent, Regicide, Regalia” and “Ascent”. Both words put together create “Regascent” and accurately summarize the game itself: ascent to be king (or regent).

This game is unique as far as we can tell. It is a 2-4 player game that exists in two phases: the Adventure phase and the Arena phase. The King of Tessera, the land in which the “contest of Champions” takes place, has recently passed away. The land and people demand a new king, but who will take the throne? It is up to champions throughout the kingdom to rise, win the favor of the people, and compete in an arena. The champion that bests his opponents earns the right to be crowned king. You, the player, embark on this epic adventure as one of four different champions; each with unique abilities and giftings.

To break it down further, during the adventure phase, you will collect cards by purchasing from city markets, defeating bandits, and completing quests. These cards are then used in the arena phase to attack your opponents and bolster your team!

Sounds cool right?

That’s because it is.

Conclusion

Our hopes moving forward are to develop games within the world of Regascent and other themes. We would love to create a game about economics centered around TCC, children’s games, homeschooler games, quick card games, etc.

One area we are really excited about is using our skills and talents to provide a label for game creators to rally under!
